Advantages and disadvantages of group work activities.

Advantages of group work

Both in language learning and in other subjects, theoreticians emphasize the importance of group work. They support their opinion by enumerating a range of disadvantages of this form of class work.
Group work gives students more opportunities for using the target language and it contributes to the improvement of the language used by the students.[1] In the 70-ties Long, Adams and McLean conducted the research on the interaction processes in the classroom to prove the above statement. It showed that group work is more effective than teacher centered activities as far as communicative competence is concerned. It also proved that students used the target language more often when they worked in groups. Moreover, the level of their communicative competence was higher than those who talked only to a teacher.
What is connected with the above statement, group work increases the amount of student talking time. Learners in a class that is divided into five groups get five times as many opportunities to speak as in whole-class organization.[2] That is why each student has a greater opportunity to use the language working in a group than working with the whole class.
Group work encourages learner independence. Learners, who are used to working in groups without the need for constant correction or immediate feedback from the teacher, become more independent. Group work resembles real life situation. Everyone spends a sizable fraction of time interacting with other people. Group work interaction is closely related to the natural discourse. It makes a learner be exposed to a language and that is why it plays a significant role during any language lesson.[4]
Besides, group work enhances students’ motivation. According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, when the security level is satisfied through the cohesiveness of the small group, learners are freed to pursue higher objectives in their quest for success.[5]
Moreover, using group work helps to develop the ability to cooperate, to communicate, to negotiate and to respect each other’s views. Students working in groups also learn to share ideas and teach skills to ...
