Visual aids in teaching vocabulary connected with clothes and patterns
Level: beginners
Focus of the lesson: Describing clothes and what people are wearing.
Time of activity: 10 min.
Aims of activity: To teach the students to name patterns.
To teach the students to describe what people are
wearing.
Assumptions: The students know names of clothes.
Anticipated Problems and Solutions: Some students may not remember how to describe
people.
Solution: Before introducing new vocabulary into descriptions
it is necessary that students describe pictures using
basic vocabulary.
Materials: Large cards with different patterns (checked, polka-
dot, striped, plain, patterned ) and colours. The cards
can be easily made with paints or pencils and the
teacher may even ask the students to prepare these.
Black and white pictures of people dressed in a
variety of clothes.

Procedure:
STEP 1. The teacher keeps the cards behind his back, then flashes a single card and says what the name of the pattern on the card is. He asks the students to listen and remember the name of the presented pattern. He continues the same procedure with other cards, and flashes the cards till he is certain that students have learnt and remembered the names of all patterns.
STEP 2. The teacher flashes the cards in a random order and asks the class to say the correct name of the pattern being flashed. When he is certain that the learners do not make mistakes, the teacher places the cards on the blackboard and writes the names of patterns below each card. The students are asked to copy the names to their notebooks.
STEP 3. The teacher gives the class black and white pictures of different people and asks them to describe what the person in each picture is wearing. While describing pictures the students use only names of clothes because they do not see any colours or patterns. Then, the teacher asks individual students to repeat descriptions but before he or she names any item of clothing the teacher flashes a card with a pattern and the student has to include that pattern in the descriptions, e.g.: He's wearing a checked jacket instead of saying He's wearing a jacket. The teacher may flash two cards at the same time: one with colour and the other with a pattern, so that the student will describe not only the pattern but also its colour.
