CHRISTMAS IN BRITAIN
Dialog poniższy można użyć podczas lekcji kultury anglojęzycznej w celu prezentacji zwyczajów świątecznych. Łatwy do zaprezentowania w klasie, lub do zagrania na forum szkoły. Przydatne rekwizyty to: cracker zawierający coś słodkiego oraz papierową koronę na głowę, jak też nagranie piosenki ‘’ Twelve Days of Christmas’’.
……………. – Oh! We’re late! It’s Christmas Day tomorrow and our guests are just about to come from Poland.
…………… - Hurry up! We need to finish our preparations on time!
………….. – Last year we went to Poland for Christmas. It was lovely! They have so many traditions for this holiday.
…………. – But we, Englishmen aren’t worse. This year WE’re going to show them OUR best Christmas.
…………. – We can’t forget about anything. Traditional English Christmas is so cheerful and ….. magic as well.
………… - What comes first? Oh. We can’t forget about advent time.. Do you know what ‘advent’ means?

……….. – It’s a term from Latin. Word ‘adventus’ means ‘arrival’.
………..- So, we’re waiting for the arrival of Christmas – coming of Jesus on earth. We’re waiting and preparing for it.
………. – We go to church for a special service and sing Christmas carols together. It’s also the time when we send our cards and decorate houses.
……….. – Oh! I’ve forgotten to eat my 24’th chocolate from my advent calendar!
……….. – And then comes December 24’th – Christmas Eve, a very exciting time for children. It’s the time when Father Christmas comes. We also call him Santa.
………. – Have you hung up all our stockings on the mantelpiece?
………. – Yes, but we also need to leave a mince pie and some brandy for Santa and a carrot for the reindeer.
……….. – Of course, Santa won’t come over if we don’t leave him the presents.
………… - But don’t you think it’s stupid? Why do we hang up the stockings?
………… - There’s a legend about it. Father Christmas once dropped some gold coins down the chimney. The coins would have fallen through the ash grate and been lost if they hadn’t landed in a stocking that had been hung out to dry. Since then, children in England have continued hanging the stocking in hopes of finding them full of gifts.

……….. – There’s a special service for children on Christmas Eve night – a candle lit service with the carols singing.
