Lesson plan 1

LEVEL: elementary
AGE: 13-14
TIME: 45 minutes
SUBJECT: The present simple tense - statements.

AIMS:
• to provide present simple forms
• to present when present simple is used,
• to practice using present simple tense.

MATERIALS:
• The pictures of routine activities (APPENDIX 1a)
• The photo of fire fighters (APPENDIX 1b)
• The text ‘A Day in the Life of a FIRE FIGHTER’ (APPENDIX 1c)
• Handouts with a set of rules for the present simple tense – form and use (APPENDIX 1d)
• Tables 1,2 to practice present simple forms (APPENDIX 1e)
• Additional exercises 1,2 to practice present simple forms (APPENDIX 1f)

PROCEDURE:

Warm-up (5 min)
1. T shows the pictures of different activities and duties (APPENDIX 1a) and asks Ss what activities are not parts of their daily routine?
Example: Empty the rubbish bins.

2. T shows the photo of fire fighters (APPENDIX 1b) and tells Ss: Guess the fire fighters’ daily routine. Ss give examples, T writes them on the BB.

T ask Ss: Is it a difficult job? Why?
Is it a dangerous job? Why?
Is there anyone from your group, who wants be a fire fighter?

Activity 1 (5 min) Reading / vocabulary
All Ss get a copy of the text ‘A Day in the Life of a FIRE FIGHTER’ (APPENDIX 1c).
Ss read the text, after that T asks them about vocabulary which they do not understand.
Some students come up to BB and write the new words from the text. T explains the meaning, gives Ss definition in English or uses mimes and gestures.

Activity 2 (15 min) Grammar
T explains the rules for the present simple tense and gives all Ss copies of the rule for present simple T asks Ss to look at the table with affirmative of present simple forms. (APPENDIX 1d). After studying the rules and examples together with T, Ss are given an exercise with a table (APPENDIX 1e). their task is to fill in the correct forms of the verbs. T checks Ss answers by asking them to read out the sentences. T talks over mistakes.

Activity 3 (5 min) Grammar practice
Ss have to complete the sentences using the correct form of the given verbs (APPENDIX 1f – exercise 1). Ss read out sentences. T talks over mistakes.
