TOPIC: Christmas customs and traditions in Britain and Poland

AIMS:
to compare Christmas customs and traditions in Britain and Poland
to revise vocabulary connected with Christmas
ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE:
Ss are familiar with the basic vocabulary connected with Christmas
Ss can read for details and specific information
Ss are able to create sentences in Present Simple tense
AIDS:
cut up texts about Christmas in Britain and Poland
cassette player
CD with Christmas carols
video cassette: Windows on Britain (U6 – Festivals)
worksheets for filling during watching video
dictionaries
TIME: 90 minutes (two 45 minutes lessons)
ANTICIPATED PROBLEMS:
some Ss can have difficulties in understanding and filling the work sheet while watching video
Ss can have problems answering questions
PROCEDURE:
1. T greets Ss and asks them some questions about celebrating Christmas in Britain and Poland. Ss answer the questions.
Do you like Christmas? Why? Why not?
How do Polish people celebrate Christmas?
Do you know any Christmas customs in Poland?
What do you know of Christmas in Britain?
Do you know any Christmas customs in Britain?
2. T asks Ss to brainstorm in pairs and collects vocabulary connected with Christmas and gives them worksheet [see Appendix 1] – star, bell, candle, stockings, sleigh, Santa Claus, Christmas tree, presents, candy cane, reindeer, Christmas card, cookies. Ss write down the names of the objects. They can use dictionaries. In meantime T puts CD with Christmas carols.
3. T explains that Ss are to watch a short film about Christmas and distributes while- watching worksheets [see Appendix 2]. T check the understanding of the words and instructions
4. Ss are watching the video and complete the task. T monitors and helps Ss by stopping the tape and highlighting some parts. When they finish watching, T gives them time to exchange the opinions about the film and complete their answers.
5. T checks the task
6. T writes on the board new vocabulary and divides Ss into groups. Each group gets 9 new words which they have to explain [see Appendix3]. When the task is completed new words are presented and explained by each group. New words are copied into notebooks
7. T assigns another task and divides Ss into groups which sit round the desk or table.T gives each group a whole set of cut up cards (i.e. the 15 individual cards from the two texts shuffled) [see ...
