Let’s learn with Enya!

Grupa wiekowa: dzieci 12 lat, nastolatki, dorośli
Stopień zaawansowania: początkujący
Obszar językowy: vocabulary, grammar, listening, pronunciation, speaking
Aims: ( to practise Present Simple verbs, particulatly those with -„s”(-„es”) endings;
( to develop listening and pronounciation skills;
( speaking about time concept in human life
Time required : 45 minutes (lesson), each activity 5-10min.
Materials: CD player, copies of Enya’s song Only time ( gapped text), copies of grammar
exercise for each student
Preparation: print a gapped text of Enya’s song Only time for students, bring printed or
cut out from the colour paper a picture of Enya, print grammar exercise for
each student.

Procedure:

I.Warm up.

Revise a rule ss. have learned previously- verbs in Present Simple tense ending with “s” or “es”. To make it more interesting and fun play with students Memory game. Say one sentence, for example: Alan gets up at 7.30 and ask one student to repeat it and add another sentence
(ex. Alan gets up at 7.30. He has breakfast at 7.45). The game continues for about 5 minutes.

II. Teaching vocabulary at pre-listening stage connected with the practice of grammar.

1.Write examples of some new verbs on the blackboard, ask students to complete singular present tense form for 3 rd person: go, cry, flow, grow, sigh, lie, sleep, fly, keep, know, meet. Pay attention to certain transformation in some verbs before adding the ending: ( cry –cries, fly-flies: consonant + y - then “y” changes into “ i”).
2. Write Polish translation of verbs next to their English grammar form.

III. Listening stage.

1. Lead-in. What is time?
Introduce topic of the lesson ( How about learning with Enya? ), write it on the board and say a few words about Enya. Expose a picture of a singer ( see app.A). Ask them if they know where Enya is from ( Ireland) and if they have heard her songs. What about the song Only time? Write the title of the song on the board. What may the song be about? What is time? Do students think the song they are going to hear is sad or not? (speculation)
2. Distribute the copies of the song with gaps to filling for students ( see app.B2). They think about possible completion of the verses using verbs they have translated in the previous stage. Let them speculate freely.
3. Students listen to the song and fill ...
