Aim:
Warm-up (2-3 min.): Brainstorming session: What is your favourite book? Which book have
you seen recently? (Students are unlikely to read any books for pleasure, so it may be difficult
to illicit any answer.)
Introduction (5 min.): Ask your students to write as many book types as they know and write
three words connected with each book type. e.g.: romance: fall in love, wedding, engagement
Present the books (15 min.): Show a presentation containing the first pages of books and ask
them the questions:
What is the title of the film?
Who is the author of the book?
What kind of a book is it? (Describe the picture on the book cover.)
Who is the book for?
Would you like to read it? Why? Why not?
Distribute the books (2-3 min.): (I used second-hand books from my personal library. It is a
good idea to let the students choose the books.)
Look into the books (10 min.): Ask the students to look at the back cover of the books and
check if they were right in their predictions before. Ask them to see what the book is about.
(Here you might need dictionaries for the students and some vocabulary explanation is
necessary; It is advisable to ask the students to work in pairs.)
Review structure and vocabulary (15 min.): Ask the students what the structure of a review
is and show them the slide containing the language elements of a review. Then ask one or two
students to present their books to the group using some of the words on the slide and on the
back page.
Follow-up (5 min.): Show them the assignment on the slide and ask them to write an email
on the basis of the book they have received (TELC A2 - writing part). Do not ask them to read
the books, it would scare them. Ask them to look into the book to find out more about the
places and people in the book. One person has certainly received a book adapted for the A2
level. Ask this student to read the book at home and present it to ...
