LESSON SCENARIO

Subject: Are you a happy person? Why?
Book: Matura Solutions (Pre-Intermediate)
Class: II
The objectives: By the end of the lesson the students will be able to :
- Express regrets about a present situation they would like to change using WISH + PAST SIMPLE, eg. I wish I were taller;
- Express regrets about the lack of their own or someone else’s abilities using WISH + COULD, eg. I wish I could swim;
- Express regrets about someone else’s behavior they would like to be different, or some external situations to be different, using WISH + WOULD, eg I wish it would stop raining.
- Formulate questions about somebody’s wish, eg. Do you wish you could speak Chinese.
Additional Materials:
- Student’s book – Matura Solutions (Pre-Intermediate);
- Handouts prepared by the teacher (a questionnaire, the use of wishes, a song with gaps, a poem);
- A picture of “unhappy Miranda”;
- A CD record.
Forms of student’s work:
- Group work;
- Individual work;
- Pair work.

The lesson plan:
Warm-up
1. T writes the subject on the blackboard: ARE YOU A HAPPY PESON? WHY?
2. T distributes the hand out questionnaire: How happy are you? – to start with fun and to set the theme (hand out 1).
3. Ss count the point, compare the answers in pairs. T elicits the answers.

Lead-in
T puts up the picture of a sad Miranda on the board ( Ss are given hand outs with the same picture – hand out 2). T elicits the reasons why she is unhappy based on the prompts to peak Ss’ interest in the topic – they read the sentences aloud.

1. Presentation.
➢ T elicitation: She lives in a tiny apartment. Is she happy? What would she like to be different? So: SHE WISHES SHE LIVED IN A BIGGER HOUSE etc.
➢ T asks questions about the new structure (tense?).
➢ T hands out worksheets (hand out 3) and explains the structures of wish for the present and future situations.

2. Practice.
➢ Ss do activity from the book (ex. 3, p. 77).
➢ Ss compare their answers in pairs; than T checks with class.

3. Production.
➢ T explains how to for questions with wishes by presenting an example: Do you wish you could speak Chinese?
➢ Game: mingle writing. Each S is given one card to complete the wishes with anything that is true for them (hand out 4). T suggests they try to disguise their writing.
