WISH + SIMPLE PAST TO EXPRESS PRESENT REGRETS
USAGE: We use wish + simple past to say that we would like things to be different than they are .
Note that the subjunctives I were and he/she/it were are possible after wish, especially in a formal style.
PRACTICE: Complete the sentences below using the cues given:
a) I live in London (and I hate London). I wish _____________________ (live) somewhere else.
b) It’s so cold! (And I hate the cold weather)
I wish _________________________________________ (be warmer).
c)I don’t know anything about cars (and my car has just broken down).
I wish _________________________(know) something about cars.
d) I have to work tomorrow (but I’d like to stay in bed).

Miranda is not so happy:
She lives in a tiny apartment (she likes houses).
She doesn’t have a pool (she loves swimming).
She is a bit short (she would like to be taller).
She can’t dance the Tango (she loves it).
