Początki muzyki gospel to slave songs czyli pieśni czarnych niewolników, które odzwierciedlały ich życie codzienne, marzenia o wolności, instrukcje dla ciekinierów, prośby i skargi do Pana. Były jednymi z niewielu rzeczy jakie tolerowali ich biali panowie. Pieśni śpiewano idąc do pracy o świcie i wracając z racy po zmroku. Pieśni dawały odpoczynek przy ognisku i uczyły co zrobić by zdobyć wolność. łówną cechą był rytm, treść przekazywana przez lidera i refren powtarzany przez innych. Lekcja skierowana jest do zainteresowanych uczniów. Uczniowie będą mogli zobaczyć i usłyszeć jak wyglądało życie na południu, praca na plantacjach tytoniu czy bawełny i szlak ucieczki na północ. Pieśni, które usłyszą są łatwe do śpiewania razem. To lekcja historii, muzyki i gramatyki, czyli czas przeszły.

Topic: Slave Songs
Aim: To discuss the problem of slavery, runaway slaves, abolition in the US, revise narrative tenses

Warm-up (2-3 min.): Brainstorming session: Slaves in the US? Where they came from and why? Slave trade triangle. Plantations in the South (tobacco and cotton fields)....

Introduction (5 min.):
What do we know about slave rights?
Singing at work, after work, during the resting time, to their Lord and to their master.
Instructions how to escape, coded songs, the rise of spirituals and gospel music.
Songs presentation: (15 min.):
Play the videos, presentation of pictures and posters with background music:
